Innovation: Applying Knowledge in Development, UN Millennium Task Force Report

“The report draws on lessons from developing countries that have used scientific and technical knowledge to alleviate poverty and grow their technologies in order to show some best practices in incorporating science, technology, and innovation in development strategies.” (Book News, 2006)

The authors point out that “responding to challenges in areas such as economic productivity, agriculture, education, gender inequity, health, water, sanitation, environment, and participation in the global economy will require increased use of scientific and technical knowledge.” In particular, the report argues that “technological innovation and the associated institutional adjustments underpin long-term growth and must be at the center of any strategy to strengthen the private sector.” (Juma and Yee-Cheong, 2005:iii)
