Approach

The STEPS Centre carries out research, engagement, methodolgical, impact and communications activities.

We have developed a unique ‘pathways approach’ which aims to understand the complex, non-linear interactions between social, technological and environmental systems. Some pathways may threaten poor peoples’ livelihoods and health while others create opportunities for sustainability.

Our interdisciplinary research links this new theory to practical solutions that address today’s global challenges.

To help promote greater appreciation of alternative social, technological and environmental pathways to sustainability, we are developing toolboxes of methods and methodologies for use in our research.

In additional to our core research, we seek to influence decision-making in policy and other arenas through an extensive programme of engagement activities with relevant individuals, groups and networks.

And to help demonstrate the value of our work we investigate the impact of our research on local and global agendas and diverse users such as scientists, policy-makers, donors, governments, NGOs, practitioners and businesses,
